Valencia, a benchmark in sustainability It is the first city in the world to certify and verify the carbon footprint of its tourist activities and has been recognised as a 'Smart Sustainable City' by the International Telecommunication Union (ITU), the UN's specialist agency for information and communication technologies (ICT). Another of the milestones that make it one of the most sustainable cities on the planet is the number of parks and gardens it has in and around the city, which total five million square metres, in addition to over 156 kilometres of cycle lanes. As part of its sustainable urban mobility strategy, it has added hybrid and electric buses to its vehicle fleet, and it is also a leader in sustainable gastronomy thanks to the creation of the World Sustainable Urban Food Centre (CEMAS), an initiative promoted by the Valencia City Council and the FAO to raise public awareness of the importance of eating food that helps to protect the environment.
